Frequently asked questions

I cannot hear the cues once my screen locks.

Chalk Up is built to keep sounding with the screen off, so check the ordinary culprits first: your phone's own volume, and whether another app has taken over audio. If the beeps come through but the spoken cues do not, that is expected, see the next question. If nothing at all comes through with the screen off, tell us which iPhone and iOS version you are on.

The spoken cues are quieter than the beeps.

They are, and that is a limit of iOS rather than a setting we can raise. The beep volume goes to 200%, but iOS will not take a synthesised voice past your system volume. If you train somewhere loud, turn Spoken cues off in Settings: every cue then falls back to a beep, so you lose nothing but the words.

Can I use it with Spotify or Apple Music?

Yes, and that is the point. The cues layer over whatever you are playing instead of pausing it, and they do not duck your music either. Set the cue volume relative to how loud you train: below 100% they sit behind the track, above it they cut through.

Why does swiping back not work while the clock is running?

On purpose. A stray swipe should not be able to throw away a workout in progress, so the gesture only takes effect once you have paused or finished. The back button in the corner always works.

How do I count rounds in an AMRAP?

A large field appears under the clock during an AMRAP. Tap it to add a round. There is a small -1 in its corner for the taps you did not mean. Your total shows on the completion screen.

The timer does not start when I open a workout.

That is intended. Opening a workout arms the clock and shows "Tap to start" under the countdown. Tap the clock, or the Start button, when you are ready. The same is true after Reset.

Do my favorites sync between my devices?

No. Favorites and settings are stored on the device only, with no account and no iCloud sync, which is also why nothing about your training leaves your phone. Deleting the app removes them.

Can I build a workout with more than one part?

Yes, that is what Custom is for. Chain any number of AMRAP, For Time, EMOM, Tabata and Rest segments into one sequence, reorder them, and the clock runs the whole thing end to end.

Does Chalk Up need an internet connection?

No. The app makes no network requests at all. It works in a basement gym with no signal.

Will there ever be ads or a subscription?

No. You paid once, and that is the whole deal.
